Summer Issue 1999
A guide into the many sides of Spirituality.
Our mission:
Is to provide a voice for any and all, that hold the tenet "Harm None" close to their heart, to discuss the varied paths of spirituality. Over the years, we have offered a number of articles that have dealt with the various branches of Goddess-based religions. While we have been very proud of our work, we feel that there are many other voices that deserve to be heard. That is why we are pointing our sights not only from a polytheistic, but a monotheistic point of view. We hope you enjoy the changes.
On the Soapbox
Let me start this by saying Im a little discouraged. We have so few submissions coming in that Im very worried about the next issue. If this keeps up, we wont have an issue to put out to all of you. Please, please, please, if you have anything at all that you would like to submit, send it to me. Well take it from there.
Now on to more pleasant topics. Hopefully, starting this issue you will be seeing some letters of introduction from the staff here at S.V. This is just so you all know whos behind the words and websites.
Speaking of the websites, Burgundy has made some fantastic changes to our online newsletter site, you should really check it out and let her know what you think. Again heres the address for you: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atrium/2769
Some coming additions to our sites will be an f.a.q. (frequently asked questions) page, which Im hoping will be a major addition, covering a definition for as many trads as we can do, as well as links to sites for more information on those trads. As well as, hopefully, many other things.
On our email community were going to be starting a running book commentary. What were hoping to do here is pick a book and as many as can read it (only a chapter or two a day please) and email comments about it so we all can learn from each other.
On a personal note. Many of you know that Im rather heavily involved with an online organization called The Gathering Worldwide Witchcraft and Pagan network. (Some changes are coming with this organization, which at this time Im not really at liberty to discuss, but will keep you all posted.) I am now the Interim State Representative for PA. As well as helping them get their newsletter off the ground and helping them build their website. So as you can see Im going to be quite busy in the next several months, but I will make you this promise. Nothing I do with TGWWPN will interfere with my first love, Spiritual Voices. If I find myself not having enough time to do all that I need to I will relinquish some of my duties with TGWWPN.
Well I think thats it for me for this time. I hope you enjoy this issue, and that you have a good summer. Will be looking to hear from you.
Until next time;
May the Deities of your choice smile upon you always,
Graehawke.
The Deity Corner
-OR- Youre Not Who Youre Supposed To Be
By: Tielengrae Blackbird
(Editors Note: This story is continued from the Spring 1999 Issue of Spiritual Voices)
...I have one other little tidbit about my guardians to share and then this article will be finished. Two weeks before the 'appearance' of Odin and Freya, I was at work cleaning the windows in one of the entryways. I got a familiar buzz in my solar plexus region which indicated that a specific guardian (lets call him Hurrumphry) wished to converse. Blanking my mind, I drifted into that part of my psyche that conducts these conversations. I felt the usual 'wash' of red as this guardian approached. But something was different. The 'feel' was the same, but the 'shape' wasnt the usual shape. Instead of large wings and powerful foreclaws, what 'appeared' before me was a man completely garbed in red. Red clothes, red hair, red beard. Everything about him screamed familiarity, and yet there was an undercurrent of change. When I asked if he was who I thought he was, he concurred. He then proceeded to tell me that this shape was 'truer' that the one to which I had been accustomed. We spoke at length about upcoming events that were to help me along my spiritual journey, then as abruptly as he 'appeared' he was gone. I filed this visit away with the intention of thinking more about it when I got home.
It wasnt until I was reading The Middle Pillar, by Israel Regardie, that the mornings conversation came back to mind. What triggered it was a passage concerning the archangel Michael. This passage was discussing the placement of the archangels while performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. The description of Michael maintained a predominance of the color red. When I read that I thought to myself, ' That sounds just like 'Hurrumphrey''.
No sooner had that thought ran across my mind than a 'flash' like a cameras flashbulb jolted my third eye chakra. Then a line from Disneys movie 'Aladdin' skipped across my mind. 'He can be taught!', was all I heard. That and a little bit of laughter. Turns out that my lovable mythological beastie, 'Hurrumphrey' is, for all intent and purposes, the archangel Michael. My instant reaction was to question why an archangel would be talking to me. Then I remembered Silver Ravenwolfs book about angels and their magickal heritage. Plus, for a brief moment, I received a benevolent smile from 'Hurrumphrey' and the simple comment 'Because you believed in me in the form I originally appeared to you. You have grown in your spiritual journey to not run away from me in the form I showed you today. Nothing has changed except your knowledge of who I really am. I pondered this for a while. Then I asked if he would ever appear to me again in the shape to which I had grown accustomed. 'Probably. Its a shape I enjoy as well', was his reply. With that in mind, I calmed myself as best as I could, then proceeded to accept that my spiritual growth was now at a plateau of resting. Time to take in what had transpired and make it a part of me. But in no way could I just sit and rest on my laurels. I may have achieved some insights, but I am in no way at the end of my journey.
So, dear reader. keep in mind that the guardians you have right now may be appearing to you in shapes that your mind will find acceptable. As you grow in your quest for spiritual harmony, dont be surprised if someday the cat, wolf, bear, or hawk you were used to seeing suddenly shows up as someone else. It simply means that you are now ready to accept a truer form of that particular guardian. Accept it, cherish it, and continue to learn from it. This is unconditional love in one of its finest forms.
Until next time,
Happy Learning!!!

"Twenty Dollars Per Hour"
"Daddy," the little boy asked, "how much do you make an hour?" His voice was
timid but his look was idolizing as he greeted his father when he returned
home from a hard day's work.
Greatly surprised but tired, he gave his boy a glaring glance and answered,
"Don't bother me now. Even your mother doesn't know that. Leave me alone."
"But, Daddy, just tell me, please! How much do you make an hour?" The boy
was insistent. Finally the father gave in and replied, "Twenty dollars an
hour."
"Okay, Daddy. Then could you loan me ten dollars?"
Showing his restlessness, and very disturbed by the question, the father
yelled, "So that was the reason you asked how much I earn? Go to sleep and
don't bother me anymore!"
It was soon dark and the father began to meditate on his conversation; he
began to regret his lack of tact. Maybe, he thought, his son wanted to buy
something.
At last, trying to ease his mind, the father went into his son's room. "Are
you asleep yet, son?" asked the father. "No, Daddy," the little boy replied,
rubbin his sleepy eyes. "Why?"
"Here's the money you asked for earlier," the father said gently.
"Thanks, Daddy!" rejoiced the son, while putting his hand under his pillow to
remove a wad of cash he had stashed there. "Now I have enough! Now I have
twenty dollars!" he enthused. The father gazed at the son in confusion.
"Daddy, could you sell me one hour of your time?

Editors note: We received this several months ago in our email, and thought that you would like to see this as well. We did contact the individual that sent this to us, and we were told that there are several different versions of this on the web. We would like to give credit where credit is due, so if you know without a doubt who wrote this, please let us know.
Friends, if you were born between 1965 and 1975 (give or take a year or two), you will certainly enjoy this.
I am a child of the 70s and 80s. That is what I prefer to be called. The 90s can do without me. Grunge isnt here to stay (I hope!), fashion is fickle and 'Generation X' is a myth created by some over-40 writer trying to figure out why people wear flannel in the summer. When I got home from school, I played Atari 2600. I spent hours playing Pitfall or Combat or Breakout or Frogger. I never did beat Asteriods. Then I watched 'Scooby Doo'. Daphne was a Goddess, and I thought Shaggy was smoking something synthetic in the back of the Mystery Machine. I HATED SCRAPPY DOO! I would sleep over at friends houses on the weekends. We played army with GI Joe and Star Wars figures, and I set up galactic wars between Autobots and Decepticons (Transform and roll out!!). We stayed up half the night throwing marshmallows and Velveeta at one another. We never beat Rubiks cube, unless you count taking off the stickers. I got up on Saturday mornings at 6 a.m. to watch bad Hanna-Barbara cartoons like 'The Snorks,' 'Jabberjaw,' 'Captian Caveman,' and 'SpaceGhost.' In between I would watch 'School House Rock.' (Conjunction junction, whats your function?!) On Friday Night, Daisy Duke was to be my future wife. I was going to own the General Lee and shoot dynamite arrows out the back. Why did they weld the doors shut anyway? Did your dad turn from mild manner Bill Bixby into 'Then Incredible Hulk' when he got upset? At the movies the Nerds got revenge on the Alpha Betas by teaming up with the Omega Mus. I watched Indiana Jones save the Ark of the Covenant, and wondered what Yoda meant when he said, 'No, there is another.' Ronald Reagan was cool. (Now we know better!) Gorbachev was the guy who built a McDonalds in Moscow. And Marty McFly would go 'Back to the Future.' My family took summer vacations to South Florida and collected 'Muppet Movie' glasses along the way. ( We had the whole set.) My siblings and I fought in the back seat. At the hotel we found creative uses for Connect Four pieces, like throwing them in that big air conditioning unit. I listened to John Cougar Mellencamp sing about Little Pink Houses for Jack and Diane. I was bewildered by Boy George and the colors of his dreams, red, gold and green. I liked to play 'Rocket' with Herbie Hancock. MTV played MUSIC videos. Nickelodeon played 'You Cant Do That On Television' and 'Dangermouse'. Does anyone remember the 'Banana Splits?' HBO showed Mike Tyson pummel everybody except Robin Givens, the Bad actress from 'Head of the Class,' who took all Mikes cashflow. I drank Dr. Pepper. 'Im a Pepper, youre a Pepper, wouldnt you like to be a Pepper too?' Shasta was for losers. Tab was a laboratory accident. Capri Sun was a social statement. Orange Juice wasnt just for breakfast anymore, and bacon had moved over for something leaner. My mom puta thousand Little Debbie Snack Cakes in my Charlies Angels lunchbox and our world was the backyard and it was all you needed.
With your pink or blue portable tape player, Debbie Gibson sang back-up tp you and everyone wanted a skirt like the Material Girl and a glove like Michael Jacksons. Today, we are the ones who sing along with Bruce Springsteen and the Bangles and have no idea why. We recite lines with the Ghostbusters and still look to the Goonies for a great adventure. We flip through T.V. stations and stop at the A-Team and Knight Rider and Fame and laugh with The Cosby Show and Family Ties and Punky Brewster and 'What you talkin bout Willis?' We hold strong affections for The Muppets and The Kroft Puppets and why did they take the Smurfs off the air? After school specials were about cigarettes and stepfamilies. Sesame Street was nothing like Barney, and arent the Power Rangers just Voltron reincarnated?
We are the ones who still remember: Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, The Bobbsey Twins, Beverly Cleary, and Judy Blume. Friendship bracelets were ties you couldnt break and friendship pins were on shoes, preferably hightop velcro Reebok ( or Kangaroos with the side pocket). And pegged jeans were in, as were unit belts and layered socks and jean jackets and JAMS and charm necklaces and side pony tails and just tails. Rave was a girls best friend; braces with colored rubberbands made you rad. The backdoor was always open and Mom only served red kool-aid to the neighborhood kids-YOU NEVER drank the New Coke. Entertainment was cheap and lasted for hours.
All you needed to be a princess was high heels and an apron; the SitnSpin always made you dizzy but never made you stop; the Green Machine or the Big Wheel could be used for impressive stunts including raod rash! Pogoballs were dangerous and Chinese jumpropes never failed to trip someone. In your underoos you were Wonder Woman, Spiderman or R2D2 snf in your treehouse you were king. In the 80s, nothing was wrong. Did you know the president was shot? Did you ever play in a bomb shelter? Did you see the Challenger explode or feed the homeless man? We forgot Vietnam and watched Tiananmens Square on CNN.
We didnt start the fire Billy Joel.
In the 80s we redefined the American Dream, and those years defined us. We are the generation in between strife and facing strife and not turning our backs. The eighties may have made us idealistic, but its that idealism that will push us and be passed to our children, the first children of the Twenty-first century. We had neighborhoods where in the day we could play kick-the-can, 'guns' and all the things that made us Grow up. There was always that one field that could be used for either baseball, football, homerun derby, or just a place to hang out. That was my field of dreams, Mr. Costner. At night we would play flashlight tag. Just like we could trick-or-treat at night without fear of being shot and killed. Just like our guns had caps or 'lasers'. If we didnt have the Jessie Jamesguns we could just get a rock and smash the caps on the ground! We loved the orange racetrack...that was until our mother realized she could smack us with them. We were the kids that not only collected Cabbage Patch Kids, but their ugly off-spring Garbage Pail Kids. We too collected football and baseball cards but it was because we wanted to be the first in the neighborhood to have the 'complete' set. Sports were important, but not near as important as Friday/Saturday Nights Main Event with our favorite WWF wrestlers. We loved to imitate their moves...until someone got hurt. In our neighborhoods we played with He-Man and Skelator. Going to get a Happy Meal on Saturday with dad or mom was worth waiting the other six days of the week. No, we are the furthest thing from a lost generation. Does going to arcades on Saturday, getting carpooled to football with your best friend, eating fruit roll-ups, having birthday parties at McDonalds or Godfathers Pizza express that you are lost? How many people melted their army figures that were given to them by their parents?
THe Green Lanter was the Coolest Super Hero not Aquaman! 'Wonder Twin powers activate!' (...a sabre-toothed tiger...a pail of water??) How about coming home at night and separating your candy into: The cool stuff, the homemade stuff, the fruit, the pennies...how about the candy that came in that awful orange and black wax paper? Did you ever try it? Do you remember the one house that had a sign in the candy bowl that said 'Take One'? How many did you take if you liked it? Were you desperate one year and as a teenager you trick-or-treated?
Our generation had character and heart. We played with real baseballs and 'Putt putt for the fun of it'. 'Hey my mom will take if your mom picks up!' Could you ever really beat Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom....How about Adventure?
Did you have sliced oranges or grapes for your half-time treat?
How about the hot dog and coke after each football and baseball game?
Star Crunches? Whippy Dip? Twinkies? Ho-hos? Pixie Sticks?
This is what WE are all about! So if you are reading this and it ALL hits home, then you do indeed have a heritage and a generation. This is what makes us the most unique generation of all. Please pass this on to all who can relate!

c. 6-8-99 by Chuck
Drawn to the darkness,
I am soothed by the lack of sunshine
and abundance of moonlight and stars.
This, for me, is the time of the Goddess.
Her secrets, Her mysteries, Her essence
unfold around me as shadows descend
and cloak me in Her love and protection.
I breath the totality of Her being,
and dance happy in the knowledge
that I am Her child.
